How in-office whitening works
Your gums are protected, and a professional whitening gel is applied to the teeth and refreshed over the visit. The gel lifts stains from within the enamel, so the color change is deeper than surface polishing. You see the result the same day.
Professional whitening lightens natural tooth color more than store-bought products, and it is done with your teeth and gums checked first.
Take-home whitening trays
We also make custom whitening trays that fit your teeth closely. At home, you wear them with a professional whitening gel for the time we recommend each day, and your shade lightens gradually. Trays suit people who prefer to whiten at their own pace, and they make touch-ups easy after in-office whitening.
Who it suits
Whitening is most effective on yellowish stains from coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco and age. Grayish stains, from some medications or from a tooth that has been injured, respond less, and white spots can stand out more at first.
Whitening only changes natural teeth. Crowns, veneers, bonding and fillings keep their color.
Whitening and veneers
If you are planning porcelain veneers or crowns, whiten first: the new work is matched to the brighter shade you keep. And when stains are deep, or the shape and length of your teeth matter as much as their color, veneers give a result whitening alone cannot. Dr. Rodriguez plans the order with you as part of your smile design.
Sensitivity
Some people feel temporary sensitivity during or after whitening. It usually passes within a day or two. If your teeth are already sensitive, tell us; we'll talk about how to keep it comfortable for you.
Keeping your shade
For the first day or two, go easy on coffee, tea, red wine and other dark foods and drinks. After that, regular cleanings, rinsing after dark drinks and the occasional touch-up with your trays help your shade last. Read how long does teeth whitening last?
